  • Classical Philology, Language, Literature, and History

  • Philosophy
  • History (medieval to contemporary)
  • Art History

Requirements
EU Citizens

  • Citizenship of an EU member state, or of another European state of which the official language is one of the following: French, English, Italian, Spanish, German
  • In possession of a Masters degree – or equivalent – to be completed no later than 31 October 2012
  • Applicants must be under 30 years of age on the closing date

Citizens of non-European Union Nations

  • Candidates must have been born after 31 October 1982
  • completion of an MA or equivalent degree prior to application deadline
  • not to have completed a research doctorate or equivalent
  • to have never or no more than once before applied for a PhD at the SNS
  • not to have been object of any of the sanctions or legal actions indicated at point a.1 in Attachment A .

Please note that if your Masters-level thesis is written in a language other than English, French, German, Italian or Spanish, then an abstract of the thesis in one of these five languages is sufficient.

How to apply

  • Application for admission to the selection must be made exclusively in English or Italian using the Application Form provided (fully signed)
  • Application (accompanied by all required attachments) must be sent exclusively by e-mail in .pdf format to concorso.ammissione@sns.it

EU Citizens

  • deadline: Wednesday, 1 August 2012.

Citizens of non-European Union Nations

  • Thursday 29 March 2012 for the Spring deadline
  • Friday 21 September 2012 for the Autumn deadline.

Late arrival of the application and/or attachments, irrespective of the cause, will result in non-admission to the competition.

Examination procedure
EU Citizens

  • Places are awarded on the basis of academic qualifications and an interview. Candidates will be admitted to the interview (an oral exam and, in certain subject areas, also written) on the basis of their academic qualifications.
  • The interview may be conducted in any of the following languages: Italian, French, English, Spanish, or German; and will take place at the Scuola Normale Superiore, in Pisa, in Piazza dei Cavalieri n. 7, from Monday 4 October 2012 onwards (in exceptional circumstances the SNS is willing to conduct interviews via videophone).

Citizens of non-European Union Nations

  • Places are awarded on the basis of academic qualifications and an interview. Candidates will be admitted to the interview (an oral exam and, in certain subject areas, also written) on the basis of their academic qualifications.
  • The interview may be conducted in any of the following languages: Italian, French, English, Spanish, or German; and will take place at the Scuola Normale Superiore, in Pisa, in Piazza dei Cavalieri n. 7, for spring session within June 2012 (in exceptional circumstances the SNS is willing to conduct interviews via videophone).
